What is a Hand Therapist?

A hand therapist is a nationally registered occupational therapist (OT) or physical therapist (PT) who has undergone continued education and clinical experience to become proficient in the treatment of pathological upper quadrant conditions. A hand specialist may also have advanced certification as a Certified Hand Therapist (CHT), which requires a minimum of three years of clinical experience, the successful passing of an examination of advanced skills and theory in upper extremity rehab, and the meeting of mandated criteria.

At Neaman Hand Surgery, we are proud to employ two Certified Hand Therapists, Cris Alba and Liz Vargo.

What is Hand Therapy?

Certified Hand Therapists assess and treat issues related to the upper extremities. They can provide postoperative rehab, non-operative intervention, preventative care, and industrial ergonomic consultations. Many different tools and techniques can be used by CHTs, including, but not limited to:

  • Custom exercise plans to increase strength, motion, and dexterity to improve hand function.
  • Ergonomic modifications.
  • Manual therapy.
  • Pain management.
  • Scar tissue management.
  • Sensory re-education or sensory compensatory techniques.
  • Prosthetic training.
  • And more.

Cris, the PT, was so knowledgeable and kind and helpful. I highly recommend this office and appreciate all they did for me!
