If you have just succeeded in losing a massive amount of weight, you are more than likely considering, minimally, a tummy tuck or liposuction to the maximum of having a full body lift.

Many people who have lost 100 pounds or more are overjoyed at their success. After losing a lot of weight, though, you may be plagued with having loose, heavy folds of skin remaining, as a harsh reminder of your former self. Plastic surgery can remove the extra skin and improve the shape and tone of tissue in your arms, thighs, breasts, buttocks, face, and abdomen.

There are several types of cosmetic surgery to help you gain a trimmer, firmer shape: Body contouring, also known as body lift surgery; tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty; buttock augmentation; breast lifts; and arm lifts and liposuction.

Tummy Tuck Surgery

Patients very often get a tummy tuck as part of body lift surgery. A tummy tuck can help flatten the stomach when diet, exercise, and weight loss have not done enough. A tummy tuck is not the same as liposuction, although you may need liposuction as part of a tummy tuck.

• Complete abdominoplasty. The surgeon will cut your abdomen from hipbone to hipbone and then contour the skin, tissue, and muscle as needed. The surgery will involve moving your belly button, and you may need drainage tubes under your skin for a few days.

• Partial or mini abdominoplasty. Mini-abdominoplasties are often done on people whose fat deposits are located below the navel. During this procedure, the surgeon most likely will not move your belly button, and the procedure may only take up to two hours, depending on your case.

Lower Body Lift

A body lift is a surgical procedure that reshapes, lifts, and tightens the abdomen, thighs, buttocks and/or breasts by removing excess skin, fatty tissue, and cellulite. A lower body lift shapes the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, and back; while an upper body lift focuses on the breasts, chest and middle back. These two body lifts can be combined, but are usually done in two stages, for a total body lift.

Post-surgery activities are usually postponed until the patient has recovered, including exercise and the lifting of more than five pounds. Walking, however, is encouraged after a body lift to reduce the risk of blood clots. For most patients, they can return to normal activities after four to six weeks and can resume an exercise program after six to eight weeks. Full recovery happens for most patients within three months, when results are fully visible.
