Placing your breast implants over or under the muscle is an important and vital question you and your surgeon will decide together. It is most common that the surgeon will place the implants under the muscle; however, there are both advantages and disadvantages to each technique.
What Muscle?
The muscle we are referring to is called the pectoralis major muscle. It lies over the rib cage, but underneath the breasts.
Breast Implants Under The Muscle
Placing the implants under the muscle increases the padding over the implant. This gives it more coverage and is easier to camouflage the actual shape of the implant itself. Also, a common “rippling effect” has become a rare issue with this technique. When saline implants rose in popularity, there was a shift to placing them below the pectoralis muscle. This occurred because many thinner women, with less breast tissue, were experiencing that rippling effect, caused by lack of coverage for the implant.
Breast Implants Above The Muscle
Of course, there are instances when one is more suited to have the implants placed over the muscle. Mainly, the shape of the breasts would dictate this decision. Women, whose breasts were much larger at one time, would need this technique. When there is a sizable decrease in volume, but there is little to no shrinkage in the size of the pocket surrounding the breast tissue, the shape could end up looking like a deflated paper bag. Quite possibly, under these circumstances, the implant may be placed above the muscle to allow the implant to fill out the breast pocket.
