Recovery after breast augmentation is a gradual process. Your implants need time to settle and your body needs time to heal from surgery. It takes time to see your final results and return back to normal life.

Sometimes, patients feel overwhelmed with the recovery process and how long it will take. Others may not be aware of what it entails at all.

Because of this, it helps to know exactly what you can expect during each week of your recovery. This recovery guide breaks the healing process down week by week and walks you through everything you need to consider while your body is recovering.

BREAST IMPLANT WITH LIFT RECOVERY TIMELINE

Knowing what to expect week by week helps you take proper measures ahead of time to ensure that you have the smoothest recovery possible.

THE FIRST DAY AFTER SURGERY

Breast changes

Your implants will appear slightly high and compressed, and the breasts will feel incredibly firm. At this point, the nipples sit low on the breasts and point downward. There is very minimal rounding at the sides or bottoms. During this phase, breasts can resemble pecs. They usually have a squared look at the top, lack outward projection, and are lacking in fullness toward the bottom.

Recovery

  • Wear a compression bra at all times, except when taking a shower.
  • Take your pain medication as prescribed.
  • Expect moderate bruising.
  • Stay hydrated and eat light, protein-rich meals if your stomach feels up to it.
  • Have someone available to help with household chores.

    WEEK 1: FOLLOWING THE SURGERY

    Breast changes

At this stage, the breasts may appear firm and high, with a less natural shape that will gradually soften. Your implants are still high at this point but will start to project outward more. Nipples will still be in a low position, and there will be some rounding on the bottom of the breasts but none on the sides.

    Recovery

    • Sleep flat on your back– avoid sleeping on your side or stomach.
    • You may experience an itching or burning sensation in your breasts.
    • Swelling and bruising will begin to fade.
    • After the first few days of recovery, you can start taking walks.
    • Don’t raise your head above your arms– wear button-down or zip-up clothing.
    • Listen to your body and rest as much as you need.

WEEKS 2-3: SETTLING BEGINS AFTER BREAST AUGMENTATION WITH LIFT

      Breast changes

Your implants will still sit high on the chest, but they will be more relaxed at this point (less compressed). While your nipples will still hang low, they may begin to point upwards. Bottom rounding increases, but the breasts are still much more rounded at the top, and there is little to no rounding at the sides.

Your breasts will still be firm but less tight. They will start to feel more comfortable. Asymmetry is normal early in healing and will often correct itself over time as the implants settle and tissues relax.

      Recovery

      • Bruising is usually gone by this point.
      • You may experience some shooting pain and irritation.
      • Patients will come in for an evaluation regarding bra guidelines
      • You can resume light cardio, like walking or cycling, but still avoid any movement that causes bouncing or chest strain.

Weeks 4-5: Continued Settling and Improved Comfort

        Breast Changes

Your implants are beginning to settle into a lower position on the chest, although they may still sit higher than their final placement. The breasts will look less compressed and start to develop a softer, more natural contour. Bottom rounding becomes more noticeable, and some side rounding may begin to emerge. Your nipples will continue to move toward a more centered position, though they may still appear slightly low.

It’s also common for one breast to settle faster than the other. Temporary asymmetry during this stage is normal and usually improves as healing progresses.

        Recovery

        • Most swelling has significantly improved, although some residual swelling remains.
        • Your breasts will feel softer and more comfortable than they did during the first few weeks.
        • Tingling, shooting sensations, numbness, or changes in nipple sensitivity may occur as nerves continue to heal.
        • You can typically increase your daily activity level, but strenuous exercise and heavy lifting should still be avoided.
        • Light exercise– like a stationary bike or running on the treadmill– is safe.
        • Continue wearing your surgeon-recommended support bra as instructed.
        • Many patients begin feeling more like themselves and are able to return to most normal day-to-day activities.

WEEKS 6-7: MORE NATURAL SHAPE EMERGES

          Breast changes

Your newly enlarged breasts start to look natural and sit in an aesthetically pleasing position. They will start to feel softer, although the sides may still feel firm. Your nipples will slowly rise up to a better position at the center of the breasts. Breast rounding at the sides begins to develop. One breast may still sit higher than the other, resulting in noticeable asymmetry

          Recovery

          • You may still notice some shooting pains, but they become less and less frequent over time.
          • You may experience some soreness in your muscles as you start to use your chest and shoulder muscles more.
          • You can begin sleeping on your side, but continue to avoid sleeping on your stomach.
          • You can start wearing bathing suits and other previously-forbidden articles of clothing – hooray!
          • Incisions are usually fully healed by this point, meaning that you can take a dip in a pool or a bath. Make sure to wait until the incisions have been fully closed for a week to ensure there is no risk of them reopening.
          • You can resume your normal exercise routine.

WEEKS 8-9: SOFTER FEEL AFTER THE SURGERY

            Breast changes

By this point, patients notice perceivable aesthetic improvements in their breasts. Your breasts will feel much softer but are still not 100% settled. Side rounding continues to improve, and bottom rounding becomes more noticeable. Your nipples are in an improved position but will probably still be lower than their final placement

            Recovery

You should be able to resume all normal activities at this point.

WEEKS 10-12: FINAL CONTOUR TAKES SHAPE

            Breast changes

By this point, patients are usually very happy with the way their breasts are looking. Your nipples should be almost entirely centered. Side rounding will be better but may take as long as 6 months to fully develop. Bottom rounding is more perceivable at this point. Swelling is almost completely dissipated, and breasts begin to get softer.

            Recovery

            • Surgical tape can be removed from the incisions and scar gel treatment can be applied.
            • Upper body exercises and even some heavy lifting will be acceptable at this point.

              6 MONTHS AFTER THE PROCEDURE

              Breast changes

Your breasts will be much softer to the touch and in their final position. The rounding process has been completed, giving the breasts better definition all around

              Recovery

              • Scar gel should continue to be applied to the treatment areas if needed.
              • You can start wearing underwire bras.
              • Continue to wear a sports bra when exercising.

What You Need to Know About the Recovery Process

Breast augmentation recovery impacts nearly every area of your life. Here’s what you need to keep in mind for a smoother healing process.

                Bras

compression bra helps minimize swelling, provide support, and keep your implants in place as your body heals. You need to wear your compression bra 24/7, even when sleeping, unless you are in the shower. Your surgeon will let you know when you’re ready to transition to a different kind of bra.

                Sleep

Sleep is a critical part of your recovery, but you have to be careful with your  We recommend sleeping on your back with your upper body slightly elevated for 1-2 weeks after the procedure. Elevation can help reduce swelling and discomfort while preventing unnecessary pressure on your chest.

If you usually sleep on your back or side, use extra pillows to help keep you on your back while you’re asleep.

                Pain Management

Soreness, tightness, swelling, and pressure are normal after breast augmentation surgery. A lot of our patients describe the feeling as muscle soreness or chest tightness.

You may receive a prescription for pain medicine. Take it as prescribed during the first few days to help manage your discomfort. Don’t push yourself to go far beyond the suggested window– minimizing your pain will help you rest and heal faster.

                Showering

You should be able to shower the day after surgery, unless you have a drain. If you have a drain near your incision, wait until it is removed to shower. When you’re able to shower, use warm water, not hot.

                Driving

You will need someone to drive you home after surgery. You shouldn’t drive while taking your prescription pain medication or if you’re too uncomfortable to drive safely. You need to be able to easily move your body while you’re behind the wheel.

Most patients can resume driving within a week, but there’s no hard and fast rule.

                Exercise

Light walking is encouraged soon after surgery because it promotes circulation and can reduce the risk of complications. However, you need to wait to participate in more strenuous exercise.

Avoid lifting anything that would make you strain– this includes things like groceries, gallons of milk, and children. Don’t raise your arms above your head, run, or participate in high-impact activities until your surgeon clears you. Returning to exercise too quickly can slow your healing and affect your final results.

                Emotional Recovery

A lot of patients expect the physical aspects of recovery, but end up surprised by the emotional side. It’s normal to experience all sorts of emotions after your surgery, including excitement, impatience, frustration, and anxiety about your results.

Remember that swelling, bruising, and implant positioning can make your breasts look different from what they’re going to look like in the end. Give your body time to heal and be patient with the process.

Scar Care After a Breast Augmentation

Your surgeon will place your incisions as discreetly as possible, but scarring is usually an unavoidable part of a breast augmentation. Your scars will fade significantly over time and become much less noticeable after a year or so.

For the first few weeks, focus on keeping your incisions clean and following your surgeon’s wound care instructions. Don’t apply any scar treatments until your incisions have fully closed and your surgeon has given you the go-ahead.

Once your incisions have healed, your surgeon may recommend scar gel, silicone scar sheets, or another treatment to help optimize scar appearance. Use it consistently for the best results.

It’s also important to keep your healing scars out of the sun, because UV exposure can make them darker and more noticeable.

Remember, it takes a long time for your scar to heal and fade. It will look pink or red and slightly raised at first, but it will soften and fade over the next year and a half. If you have concerns about how your scars are healing, bring them up at your follow-up appointment so we can help you address them.

                FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

                What is breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation surgery increases the size and volume of the breast with implants and can also help correct asymmetry between the breasts.

Should I get silicone or saline breast implants?

In the silicone vs saline debate, one is not inherently better than the other. It depends on the patient, body, and their goals. Learn more during a consultation with Dr. Neaman.

                Where are breast implants placed?

Breast implants are either above or below the chest muscles. The more popular option is below the muscle, but there are anatomical considerations to take into account.

Can I get a mammogram after a breast augmentation?

Yes, but special techniques need to be used. Your OBGYN and their staff regularly see breast augmentation patients and you can still get a quality mammogram even if you have breast implants.

                How long does swelling last?

Most of your swelling will happen the first few weeks after surgery and then subside over time. By weeks 4-6, the majority of the swelling should be gone, but a little residual swelling can last up to 5-6 months.

When can I sleep on my side?

Most patients need to sleep on their back until week 6, then can start sleeping on their side again. Everyone is different though, so check with your surgeon for their specific recommendations.

How long before implants look natural?

Most patients start seeing their new natural shape emerge around 6-8 weeks after surgery, but implants can continue settling and softening for 6 months or more.

When can I lift my kids again?

Depending on your healing and how old your kids are, you should be cleared to lift them somewhere between 4-8 weeks after surgery. It helps to have extra childcare help after surgery. You might also find ways to help them into spaces, like bringing a stool they can use to climb into their own car seats.
