What Is Included In A Mommy Makeover
Generally speaking, a mommy makeover is a term commonly used to describe rejuvenation surgery of the abdomen and breasts. However, there are many different options/procedures involved in a surgery of this type.
What Is Included in a Mommy Makeover?
The procedures in mommy makeover surgeries are usually a combination of:
Breast lift with or without augmentation
A breast lift raises anf reshapes sagging breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the tissue. You can combine it with implants to add volume and fullness.
Breast reduction
This procedure removes excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to reduce the size and weight of your breasts. It can help reduce discomfort associated with having a larger breast size, and may be covered by insurance.
Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck)
A full tummy tuck removes excess skin and fat from your abdomen and tightens separated abdominal muscles. It can be especially impactful for women who developed diastasis recti during pregnancy.
Mini abdominoplasty
A mini tummy tuck is less involved, and it usually focuses on loose skin and muscle laxity below your belly button. It comes with a shorter recovery period.
Liposuction
Liposuction removes stubborn pockets of fat from your stomach, arms, and legs to give you the body shape you want. However, it isn’t a weight loss procedure.
Simple scar revision of a C-section
If you’re unhappy with how your c-section scar turned out, this area can be revised. Your surgeon will remove scar tissue and re-close the incision so it’s less noticeable.
Small or large breast implants
You’ll probably notice a change in the firmness and volume of your breasts after breastfeeding. Implants can help restore or enhance their shape.
Full breast reconstruction
This is a more complex procedure that rebuilds breast shape. Reconstruction may be recommended after significant volume loss, and you can use your own tissue or implants.
| Procedure | Typical Recovery Time | Cost Efficiency | Common Procedures to Pair it With |
| Breast Lift | 1-2 weeks for initial recovery, 4-6 for full return | More cost efficient when combined with a tummy tuck or liposuction | Tummy tuck, liposuction, implants |
| Breast Reduction | 1-2 weeks for initial recovery, 4-6 for full return | Can be cost-efficient, may be covered by insurance | Tummy tuck, liposuction |
| Tummy Tuck | 2 weeks for light activity, 6-8 weeks for full activity | High value when combined because of shared surgical costs | Breast lift, implants, liposuction |
| Mini Tummy Tuck | 1-2 weeks for light activity, 4-6 weeks for full activity | Although less expensive, it still shares costs | Liposuction, breast procedures |
| Liposuction | 1 week for light activity | Very cost-effieicnet when added to another procedure | Tummy tuck, breast procedures |
| C-Section Scar Revision | Around a week | Highly cost-efficient as an add-on procedure | Full or mini tummy tuck |
| Breast Implants | 1 week for light activity, 4-6 weeks for full activity | More cost-efficient when combined with a lift | Breast lift, tummy tuck |
| Full Breast Reconstruction | Varies | N/A– more focused on medical needs | May be staged with other procedures depending on case |
How are procedures customized?
No two mommy makeovers look exactly the same. The combination, technique, and timing of mommy makeover procedures depend on:
- Your goals and priorities: Do you want to return to your pre-pregnancy shape or experience a more noticeable change?
- Your anatomy and starting point: Your current skin elasticity, amount of excess skin, breast volume, and muscle separation will influence what procedures are recommended.
- Recovery and timing: In some cases, everything can be done at once. For other moms, the surgeon might recommend spacing out the procedures to recovery isn’t overwhelming.
- Long-term plans: If you anticipate future pregnancies or haven’t met your weight goals, your surgeon may recommend different mommy makeover options. The goal is to help you achieve results that hold up over time.
When you attend your consultation, Dr. Neaman or Dr. Christiansen will walk you through your options to determine which procedures would be the best fit for your goals.
The benefits of combining procedures
There are several advantages to combining procedures in a mommy makeover.
Cost-savings
A mommy makeover is a larger investment upfront, but it can offer substantial savings if you plan to have all of the procedures done at some point. Expenses like anesthesia, facility fees, and surgeon time are consolidated, making a mommy makeover more cost-effective in the long run.
Single recovery period
Instead of undergoing multiple surgeries and multiple recovery periods, you only have to go through recovery once. For busy moms, this means less time away from work, your kids, and all the looming household responsibilities.
More balanced results
Pregnancy and childbirth impact many different parts of your body. Addressing all of the unwanted changes at the same time gives you a more harmonious outcome and more natural-looking results.
Mommy Makeover Recovery
The recovery period after a mommy makeover varies from person to person. Some patients are young and bounce back, while others are older and take longer to recover. For an “average” mommy makeover, patients can usually drive by 1 week, walk five miles on a flat surface by two weeks, and run by 4 weeks. Hard workouts generally start at around 6 weeks.
